I am a South African born and educated consultant ophthalmologist. Before immigrating to Scotland in 1997, I worked in the city of East London, South Africa, as a general ophthalmologist, the nearest tertiary referral hospital being 600 miles away.
After completion of training I qualified as FCS (South Africa), FRCS (Edinburgh), and was a founder fellow of the RCOphth (UK).
From 1997 to the present, I have been a consultant at Borders General Hospital, Melrose. I am currently Head of Service.
I became involved in examining for the RCSEd in 1998 and for the past 3 years have been chair of the Specialty Surgical Group for ophthalmology. I have regularly contributed educational/review articles to Surgeons News, the journal of the RCSEd. I have always enjoyed participating in ophthalmology education and examinations, and in liaison with optometry, general practice, and allied ophthalmic professionals. I am looking forward to being a team member in the development of the new Ophthalmology Masters Programmes of the University of Edinburgh.
